Nightcliff Beach in Darwin

I was in Darwin during the jellyfish season when bathing in the sea is not recommended. The main reason is occurrence of the Box Jellyfish - the most venomous animal known; it is capable of killing a human being in two minutes.

The Box Jellyfish inhabits mainly the shallow waters in northern Australia, although similar species of jellyfish can be found in Vietnam, Phillipines or Brunei.

There are warning signs along the beaches, describing the symptoms of having been stung by a box jellyfish as well as the first aid. All beaches were virtually empty - the only people I saw enjoying their time in the sea were Aboriginal kids.

I was very intrigued by the Box Jellyfish and deliberately went to the Darwin Museum where they have it on display (very good museum by the way - and the museum cafe makes a good pumpkin soup).
