A billabong is a temporary lake that fills up during the Wet season and dries out during the Dry season. Billabongs are essential for Australian tropical ecosystems - they provide water and help many flora & fauna species survive during the Dry. (Billabong is also a sports wear brand.)
This wet season wasn’t quite that wet – which was not good for the nature but was good for the tourists who came to do some bird watching.
The best time to visit the Yellow Water Billabong is early in the morning (bring a big lens if you’re a photographer). At this time you can spot an enormous (and I mean enormous) number of water birds.
My guide could name them all (although he could have made them all up of course - how would I know) and I was going to write down at least 25 out of the 2,000 we saw. In the end, I only remembered Jabiru (guess why) and a little bird that can walk on water and hence got nicknamed "Jesusbird".
