"Lost curry case
Mohammad Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Central, wants chicken tikka masala - once described by Robin Cook as Britain's true national dish - to receive European Union protection as a Glasgow recipe, having been created in the city's Shish Mahal restaurant in the 1970s.
Birmingham council staff are examining a similar case for the balti. Whatever the merits of these popular fusion dishes, however, trying to restrict the use of their names to ones made in those cities looks like a lost cause. A 1998 survey by the Real Curry Restaurant Guide found 48 varieties of chicken tikka masala, the only common ingredient of many being chicken."
