Ticket Of Passage

"The holders of this ticket, H Spierl and his wife, from Lesum, have, by paying two hundred Thalers, reserved berths for two persons on the ship 'Pauline'. Boarding of the ship will be taking place on 8 June, 1846 in Bremerhaven for passage to Port Adelaide when the balance is paid. By order of the ship owner Mr Erich F Oelrich. Failure to board the ship in time will forfeit this payment. Bremen, 28 May, 1846."

The South Australia is the only state in the Commonwealth of Australia that doesn't have any convict history. Colonel William Light landed at the South Australian shore in 1836 and proclaimed the area a British colony (how simple!). Light designed and surveyed the capital city, and the colony's first governor named it after the wife of the British monarch William IV. (Adelaide). The colony was self-supportive by the mid-1840s and self-governing by 1856.
South Australia is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. Wine was brought to South Australia by German protestants who came here as early as in 1839.

South Australia was the first country in the world to introduce general vote rights for women and the first Australian state to have a legal nudist beach.

The ticket comes from the Migration Museum in Adelaide. In mid-19th century Australia competed over free immigrants with the United States. People preferred America mainly because the journey over the Atlantic was cheaper, took less than a quarter of the journey to Australia and the American climate was more similar to the British climate. Trying to catch up with the competitor, Australians colonies offered to pay for the journey ticket as well as the food during the journey. The Shorter History of Australia by Geoffrey Blainey says that: "The immigrants, who decided to use the support from the government, were given a list of things they had to bring with them. Every woman, for instance, besides bed sheets, towels and at least one kilogramme of soap, had to bring two dresses, two pairs of shoes, six pairs of stockings, two flannel or wool shifts and six chemises."

To be honest, I'm pleased that I can book my flight ticket online nowadays and I am quite happy to pay for it. By the way - do you know what QANTAS stands for?
